It was a scorching sunny afternoon and I was returning home sandwiched in a crowded bus. Just like every other day, I quickly plugged in my earphones to escape the commotion of the situation. The shuffled playlist went on to play some latest bollywood songs for sometime until something suddenly dawned on me. All I was listening to, was some senseless set of words floating on random stimulating tune laced by an excessively digitally processed voice. That was the first moment I realised that Bollywood music, that was once a rage with its impeccable melody, is somehow losing its charm with every passing day.
Formerly, say, during the pre-modern times, music was associated with some mathematical and theoretical application of harmonics and their arrangements. Later, with time, the focus shifted on making it more appealing to listen to, and so, the innovations continued, leading to the advent of melody. Indian music, that once, boasted about its out-of-the-world melody, today however is taking a turn for the worst. The crappy lyrics that intends to catch-up with the youth is deteriorating drastically. I mean, button of a shirt, saare falls, chewing gums......seriously, give me a break!
"Exceptions confirm the rule", so I do agree some good music still exists (fortunately :P) but then, it's rare..! The tracks are beautiful many a times, but the biggest spoiler these days is the high use of technology to mend the voices which actually takes away the authenticity. With everyone keen on trying to sing a bit here and there, I highly doubt whether we are going to have someone even close to being as versatile as Sonu Nigam or as melodious as Lata Didi.
Some may still choose to defend this crap by saying that it's the need of the day, but these are strictly my personal views because music is something much more aesthetic that someone crooning random words that lack any meaning. It can be used to create an entire emotion but is rather being used just to stimulate us or create hype for a few days. It's high time we reflect over this and create something substantial or else it won't be surprising if people couldn't take any more of it!
High time someone said it! I totally agree with each and every single word you've written here. It's a topic that repeatedly disturbs me. Daily I get to hear those sick Honey Singh numbers and I wonder if we'll ever get to hear real voices and real melodies ever again. That's why I always resort to the 80's music..
